Fort Worth will always be my home but more and more I am so glad we left. It seems that Fort Worth has yet again taken a big blow in the banned books department. Back in May, I read an article that a bill might pass with books being rated similar to movies, video games, and CDs. The next thing I knew it was the beginning of the school year and articles began popping up in my feed about how all Ft Worth school libraries were closed to sort out all the books that were deemed to not be there.
When I read this I sent the article over to a friend who happens to teach high school in the district and he confirmed that his school was going through the process. When they were finished there were rows and rows of bare shelves where books once sat for eager readers.
Don't get me wrong, I am a parent myself and am just as concerned about the things he will be reading as the next parent. But I do think that this entire thing has gotten completely out of hand. Most of this is due to religious individuals and people who are homophobic being against a surge of LGTBQ+ books being written and put in school libraries. I honestly don't understand what the big deal is. If you don't like a book or if it's against your religion why can't they simply not read it instead of raising a big stink and taking them out altogether?
Ironically I have not heard about this happening in small-town Mcgregor.
