Bethany Shanholtz and her friends are growing up. Bethany moves back home for a break after a top-secret mission she worked on goes awry. The town has changed, it seems, as well as her dynamics with her old friends and especially her ex-boyfriend. And then there are the murders, which might be connected to the Mount Hideaway Complex, a secret government facility. Bethany has to solve the murders without government support and the help of her old friends. But can she do it in time to help Jamie?
I loved the second installment in this series. I liked how the story depicted a young adult that is living with her family. The plot continues the story of the first book and leaves some callbacks as you are reading it. The mystery is good and intelligent and I am enjoying the development of the young characters by getting to know more about them. The town also has a wonderful cast of characters that I am enjoying getting to know. The book touches on dealing with loss and the dynamics of romantic relationships and how they are forever changing healthily and realistically but doesn’t talk down to the readers.
The book is reminiscent of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys with a dash of wit and humor. You can read this book as a stand alone but I highly suggest checking out the first book and watching the movie after reading this book to get a better grasp on what some characters are thinking. I am a true fan of this series and am definitely going to have to read Book 3 now to know what happens next!
